Building a Simple Smart Home with ESP8266

The ESP8266 is one of the most popular WiFi microcontroller modules for beginner IoT projects — it's affordable, and its large community makes it easy to find references whenever you run into trouble.

Basic requirements for a simple smart home project: an ESP8266 module (e.g. NodeMCU), a relay module to control electrical devices (lights, fans), and a companion app (either custom-built or using an existing free IoT platform).

The basic workflow: the ESP8266 connects to the home WiFi, receives on/off commands from the app over the internet, then activates the relay connected to the target electrical device. The same principle can be extended to temperature sensors, motion sensors, or automatic curtain control.

Something beginners often overlook: a relay controlling AC (mains) power MUST be properly isolated from the microcontroller side — never touch the relay section while the device is still plugged into mains power. If you're not yet confident with AC wiring, it's safer to practice first with low-voltage (DC) devices like an LED strip.

A project like this is a great first step before moving into more complex smart home systems — and the underlying understanding is exactly the same as what's used in many commercial IoT devices.
