Getting to Know Embedded Systems and IoT

An embedded system is a small computer system designed to run one specific function inside a larger device — from washing machines and CCTV cameras to temperature sensors in a smart home. Unlike general-purpose computers, embedded systems typically run on far more limited resources.

The Internet of Things (IoT) extends this concept: embedded systems connected to the internet so they can exchange data in real time. The most common example is a smart plug that can be switched on via an app, or a soil moisture sensor that sends data directly to a farmer's phone.

To start learning embedded systems and IoT, microcontrollers like the ESP32 or Arduino are the most beginner-friendly entry point. Both have large communities, thorough documentation, and affordable module prices for experimentation.

Important concepts to understand early on include GPIO (General Purpose Input/Output) for reading sensors and controlling actuators, communication protocols like I2C and SPI between components, and networking protocols like MQTT for sending data to the cloud.

As sensor modules and connectivity get cheaper, IoT is no longer just a hobby project — many industries are now adopting it for automation, remote monitoring, and energy efficiency.
