How to Store and Maintain Your Soldering Iron for Years of Use

A properly maintained soldering iron can last for years, while one that's carelessly stored usually fails within months. Here are simple habits that make a big difference.

Clean the tip every time after use. Hardened solder residue on the tip speeds up oxidation. Wipe it with a wet sponge or brass wire before turning the iron off — never let it cool while still dirty.

Always coat the tip with a thin layer of solder before storing it ("tinning"). This solder coating protects the tip's surface from air oxidation while the tool sits unused for a while.

Set the temperature to match the job, not always at maximum. Constantly running at too high a temperature accelerates tip wear and risks damaging sensitive components. Ordinary components only need about 300-350°C.

Store it in a dry place with a stable stand. Humidity speeds up corrosion on the heating element, and a wobbly stand risks the tool falling while still hot.

A small investment in these maintenance habits is far cheaper than replacing a soldering iron every few months — and your solder joints stay neater because the tip remains in optimal condition.
