Before daring to open up a smartphone, it's important to first get familiar with its main internal components. A small mistake while opening the case or disconnecting a flex connector can lead to damage far worse than the original problem.

The core components beginner technicians handle most often are the screen (LCD/OLED with touch digitizer), the battery, the charging port flex connector, and the motherboard that houses the main chipset. Each is connected via extremely thin flex cables that tear easily if pulled with force.

Essential tools to prepare include precision screwdrivers (usually a Y-tip and Phillips #00), a plastic spudger for prying connectors, a heat gun or hair dryer to soften screen adhesive, and anti-static tweezers.

One good habit before disassembly is photographing every step of the teardown. This documentation is a huge help during reassembly, especially for remembering the position of screws that vary in length at each point.

Finally, always disconnect the battery first before touching any other component, to avoid a short circuit that could permanently damage the motherboard.
